Hydrotherapy is a treatment which takes advantage of the properties of water to aid with pain relief and rehabilitation.
As the (warm) water provides the patient with buoyancy, it means that exercise is more comfortable as the load bearing on painful limbs is greatly reduced.
The viscosity of the water stabilizes the patient and helps increase sensory awareness via receptors in the skin.
The hydro-static pressure of the heated water reduces swelling and pain. It also improves the patient’s lymphatic and circulatory systems.
The resistance of the water, or the amount of force required to move through the water, improves both muscle tone and cardio-vascular fitness.
